From Coast to Coast: StoryCorps Historias in Arizona, Puerto Rico and California

January 29th, 2010  |  Published in Blog

This week, Latino USA is featuring a StoryCorps Historias segment about education. More interviews like the ones featured this month are recorded every day and archived at the Library of Congress through this oral history and public radio project. StoryCorps Historias travels the country recording conversations between Latinos. Lately, the project has been in Yuma, Arizona and Vieques, Puerto Rico.

In Vieques, StoryCorps Historias partnered with Radio Comunitaria Vieques-FM, and recorded over 70 interviews with people from Vieques, Ceiba, Culebra, Humacao, Naguabo and Fajardo.  Participants ranged in age from 11 to 106 years old and talked about the life experiences of growing up in the shadows of the US Naval presence in the area. Here are some of the participants recording their interviews:

On Sunday, January 24th, 2010, participants of the oral history project from the 6 towns convened in Vieques at El Fuerte Conde Mirasol, the last Spanish fort built in the Americas. It is now a museum.

In Yuma, StoryCorps Historias teamed up with Congressman Raúl Grijalva and recorded interviews with several senior citizens living in San Luis, Arizona who were involved in the Farm Worker’s Movement during the 1960s. Many of the people interviewed knew and worked alongside civil rights leader César Chávez.

StoryCorps Historias will be in East Los Angeles and Fresno, California, working with Street Poets Inc to gather the voices of young Californiano Latinos. Southern California Public Radio station KPCC will be hosting this stop. If you are a Californiana or Californiano and want to record a conversation, you can make a reservation at storycorpshistorias.org. Para español, llama al 1-800-850-4406.
