March 30, 2007 Full program MP3, 29 minutes.NEWS Latino USA's Maria Hinojosa and Univision's Maria Elena Salinas speak about news issues of the week affecting the Latino community. BLACK CHURCH OUTREACH In Atlanta, a mostly African-American Baptist church has started a Hispanic ministry with a mission to tap into the areas growing Latino population. Church members say they share the same struggles. From Georgia Public Broadcasting in Atlanta, Susanna Capelouto reports. RELIGION TRENDS Maria speaks with author Gaston Espinosa on how religion is affected by changing Latino demographics. EXPRESS BAPTISMS On Olvera Street in downtown LA sits the oldest mission church where every Saturday hundreds of Latino immigrants make a pilgrimage to baptize their children. The church of Our Lady The Queen of the Angels baptizes 50 babies an hour and more than 300 babies every weekend. For immigrants who work long hours the draw is simple: the mission doesn't require parents to take classes beforehand like most churches. Contributor Abel Salas calls it the McDonald's of Baptism. COMMENTARY: HOME CHURCH For some, finding a home in the church can be a lifelong quest. For others, like contributor Lily Percy, church was as close as, well, home. |
