AUSTIN RACE RELATIONS Latino USA's Maria Hinojosa speaks with Akwasi Evans, publisher of the weekly newspaper NAKOA, and Marcos De Leon, a member of Mexican-American neighborhood organization El Concilio about race relations between blacks and Latinos in Austin, Texas. LATINOS AND FREE TRADE The Bush Administration and leaders of the Democratic Party recently reached a bipartisan deal that is meant to facilitate the passage of free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and Peru. Proponents of these bilateral free trade accords have been lobbying Congress relentlessly, hoping to get the pacts signed and delivered before the summer recess. Yet, critics of the free trade agreements are also stepping up their efforts to block the accords in order to ensure human rights and environmental protections, particularly in Columbia. Contributor Mario Murillo has this report from New York about growing community-based opposition to free trade agreements.
