AVE MARIA CHURCH For decades, Immokalee, Florida, has been a home away from home for thousands of migrant workers, who come to labor in the area's tomato and citrus farms. But the development of a high profile new Catholic town down the road called Ave Maria may change the face of the region. Will the construction of one town mean the transformation of another? Nik Steinberg reports from southwestern Florida. HECTOR LAVOE REMEMBERED August third marks the theatrical release of the film, El Cantante. Produced by Jennifer Lopez and starring Latin music artist Marc Anthony, El Cantante is based on the life and death of legendary salsa singer Hector Lavoe. Born Hector Juan Perez to a musical family in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Lavoe found musical success in New york with band leader Wille Colon and the Fania music label. Considered a founder of the salsa music movement, Lavoe's musical success catapulted him into a world of international stardom. But fame had a high price: drugs, infidelities, suicide attempts, and finally, AIDS brought the tragic end to Lavoe. He died June 29th, 1993 at the age of 46. Latino USA's Mandalit del Barco was in New York at the time of the singer's death. Here's an excerpt of the Hector Lavoe obituary she produced for us in 1993. "EL CANTANTE" The song "El Cantante" was written by a talented young artist at the time named Ruben Blades. "El Cantante" went on to become Lavoe's signature song, and, of course, is the title of the new film. Lavoe left behind a long string of salsa classics that Marc Anthony, who stars as Lavoe, uses to illuminate his rise and fall. As Latino USA's Chuy Varela reports, the soundtrack to the album featuring Marc Anthony is as compelling as the film. |
