NEWS Latino USA's Maria Hinojosa and Univision's Maria Elena Salinas speak about news issues of the week affecting the Latino community. GONZALES' RESIGNATION Alberto Gonzales steps down, putting an end not only to a career as the nation's first-ever Hispanic Attorney General, but also perhaps its most controversial. While there is a sense of closure now that Gonzales' resignation is official, the fact is that controversies remain, and the consequences continue to reverberate throughout the Latino community. Latino USA's Washington D.C. Patricia Guadalupe reports. ROBERTO LOVATO Latino USA's Maria Hinojosa speaks with syndicated columnist Robert Lovato on the impact of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' resignation on the Latino community. HUTTO RULING A few months ago, we reported on an immigration detention center near Hutto, Texas, where, for the first time since Japanese Americans were interred during World War II, Children were being held in involuntary detention with their families. The center has been the subject of attention by human rights advocates. And this week, officials announced an agreement between the American Civil Liberties and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. As KUT's Joy Diaz reports, the agreement settles a lawsuit over the living conditions families faced in the facility. ARTURO SANDOVAL Trumpeter Arturo Sandoval was 12-years-old when he began to play in his village band in his hometown of Artemisa, in the Havana province of Cuba. An avid jazz fan, Sandoval defected to the U.S. while touring with the legendary Dizzie Gillespie. Sandoval's life story was the subject of a 2000 film titled, For Love or Country, and starred Andy Garcia. More recently, Sandoval has released a new CD called, Rumba Palace. It features some smoking dance music arranged for a Latin big band. Sandoval has a long and, some say, controversial career. Independent producer Reese Erlich spent some time with Sandoval, and sent us this report. |
