May 23, 2008 Full program MP3, 29 minutes.WEEK IN REVIEW Latino USA's Maria Hinojosa and Univision's Maria Elena Salinas speak about news issues of the week affecting the Latino community. ARIZONA DIVIDED In Arizona, state legislators have moved forward with a variety of laws to crackdown on what they see as a criminal threat to society, undocumented immigrants. Couple this with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who's made arresting and deporting people one of his top priorities, and its no wonder that the state is now considered by many as ground zero for the immigration debate. From Phoenix, Latino USA's Andrew Stelzer has our story. CARELESS DETENTION SERIES Latino USA's Maria Hinojosa speaks with Washington Post reporter Dana Priest about her and colleague Amy Goldstein's recent series about health care offered to detained immigrants. COMMENTARY: JUAN CROW Commentator Roberto Lovato writes on what he calls "Juan Crow," the current restrictions and fear immigrants experience. Roberto Lovato is a New York-based writer with New America Media and the Nation Magazine. ESPERANZA SPALDING Latino USA's Maria Hinojosa speaks with jazz singer and bassist Esperanza Spalding about her latest album, Esperanza. |
