In our first By The Numbers segment, award winning journalist Guy Garcia announces a new minority-majority tipping point for the United States. And it’s happening sooner than you think. Previous projections put that tipping point – the moment when whites are no longer in the majority – in 2043. Garcia says that moment will happen in August 22nd, 2014 at 7:56pm EDT.

To arrive at that date, Garcia – who works at the consumer research firm EthniFacts – used an algorithm that takes into account multiracial populations, intermarried couples, mixed households and people who live in highly diverse, urban areas. In essence, he’s saying that when we talk about things like shared cultural values and consumer markets, it makes sense to include white people who have been deeply influenced by multiculturalism. Guy Garcia speaks with Maria Hinojosa about the implications of America’s changing demographics, and the impending attitude shifts in smaller towns resistant to immigration.
