Day laborers working informal jobs can often be cheated out of their pay or face dangers at the work site. Workers, some without legal immigration status, wait on the streets in hopes of picking up a construction gig or landscaping job with no promise of security or safety precautions. These one-off gigs don’t come with the requisite Department of Labor posters informing workers of their rights. But all workers, regardless of immigration status, are entitled to workplace safety and to get paid the minimum wage. In California, some workers are coming together to demand safer conditions and better wages.
