In July, Latino USA released a special two-part series that investigated the unusual death of a man in an U.S. immigrant detention center. The man’s name was José de Jesús Deniz Sahagun, and the Marshall Project-assisted report explored conditions —especially mental health services— inside the immigrant detention system.
This Latino USA series was recently featured by Spanish news station Telemundo Arizona in a four-part video series titled, “Celda 603: la agonía de un inmigrante” (“Cell 603: The Agony of an Immigrant”). Telemundo included additional reporting and an interview with Latino USA host Maria Hinojosa and producer Fernanda Echávarri.
“The truth is as a journalist I said, ‘That’s impossible. I’ve never heard such thing.’ I wanted to understand what happened,” said Hinojosa.
