Happy 2020! If you’re a long-time listener, you might know by now that we have a tradition of doing a special show around New Year’s Day full of our favorite “How I Made It” music segments of the year. This show features artists from all different types of genres—from electronic dance music to boleros.
First up, Michael Brun —a DJ and producer from Haiti— tells us how he aims to show the world Haiti’s rich sonic landscape. Then, we hear from singer Miguel Pimentel, known artistically as Miguel, and his cousin Mireya Ramos, who is from the all-women mariachi group Flor de Toloache. Their song “Te Lo Dije” fuses bachata, mariachi and R&B. Finally, end the show with dreamy boleros from the Puerto Rican satirical music group Los Rivera Destino.
