Award-winning Mexican actors Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal’s careers span decades.

The two starred alongside each other in the 2001 hit movie “Y Tu Mamá También”, which catapulted them to stardome.

In the years since, both Diego and Gael have pursued their own successful careers. They’ve starred in their own Hollywood projects: Diego has been involved with “Narcos: Mexico”, the Star Wars film “Rogue One” and its spinoff series “Andor,” while Gael has taken on films like “Amores Perros”, “Coco” and “Cassandro”.

The two have worked together behind the scenes as producers, but they haven’t teamed up on camera since 2012’s “Casa de mi Padre.” Now, they both star in Hulu’s first original Spanish-language series “La Máquina,” where Gael plays an older accomplished boxer and Diego plays his manager.

They’ve also collaborated as executive producers on the documentary “State of Silence”, which is now on Netflix. The film follows some of the threats and dangers Mexican journalists face while reporting in their country.

On this episode of Latino USA, Maria Hinojosa sits down with Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal to talk about their latest projects — and their lifelong friendship.

“With the years what I’ve found is I know friendship,” said Luna. “I know what that is. I have deep friendships, but what I have with Gael is something else. I think what we have is called more like your chosen family, that goes deeper.”

They also discuss what it’s like to work on both sides of the border, how they create politically powerful art, and even share a few boxing tips along the way.
