In 2022, Lisbeth Bencosme was shot on a street in Harlem, suffering four gunshot wounds. Lisbeth, who was 18 years old at the time, had just given birth to her daughter only weeks prior. At the time of the shooting, she was wearing her faja, a postpartum girdle well-known among Latinas, and it was this garment that kept her alive.
“My faja was extremely thick,” Lisbeth said with a chuckle, “Like I paid almost a hundred dollars for that faja in Washington Heights.” It was supposed to help her get her body back in shape after pregnancy. But she never expected it would literally save her life.
Though Lisbeth recovered physically, the shooting would thrust her into months of depression, anxiety, and lingering trauma. In this episode, we hear about Lisbeth’s journey of healing from gun violence and postpartum depression, in a country where there’s little support for either.
