The 1954 film ‘Salt of the Earth’ tells the dramatic story of how a town took on a mining company to demand their rights. And it was based on real-life events. Latino USA heads to Grant County, New Mexico, to uncover the story behind The Empire Zinc Strike, to find out how a sleepy mining town erupted in protest and if almost 70 years later, anyone still remembers.
Also, Héctor Figueroa, president of 32BJ SEIU, joins us to talk about Latinos in labor organizing and that state of labor unions today.
Thank you for reminding us of this inspiring story, of our beautiful and brave people, and of the film. I hope to view it.
