Karen Coates
Karen Coates is a New Mexico-based journalist and author who reports globally on food, environment, health, and human rights. She is a fellow with the International Women’s Media Foundation, which has supported her project with Valeria Fernández on child labor in U.S. agriculture. Their story, “The Young Hands That Feed Us,” was nominated for a James Beard Award in investigative reporting. Karen is also a former Ted Scripps Fellow in Environmental Journalism at the University of Colorado and a contributing editor for Archaeology Magazine. She and visual journalist Jerry Redfern are co-producing a documentary film, Eternal Harvest, on the devastating effects of the US bombing campaign in Laos.
