Luis J. Valentín Ortiz

He studied economics at Pennsylvania State University. He began his journalistic career on the Puerto Rican Weekly Caribbean Business where he worked for seven years as proofreader and editor while studying Law at the University of Puerto Rico. After getting his juris doctor in 2014, he started covering everything related to the fiscal management of the government of Puerto Rico, including its most recent debt crisis. In 2016, his work on this subject earned him the “Laura Rivera” award for young journalist bestowed by the Puerto Rican Press Association (ASSPRO). In 2018, he started working at the CPI, where he continues his specialized coverage of Puerto Rico’s debt, the federal law PROMESA and its implementation of a Fiscal Control Board and the current Commonwealth bankruptcy proceedings.
